Colonie Cult

Weiss Splinter Group Not Part of the Legitimate Jewish Community

Now, with all the evidence against this "rabbi", you'd think that people would have wised up and walked away from him - to protect their own kids if nothing else. However, as Albert Einstein once said, "only two things are infinite - the universe and human stupidity - and I am not so sure about the universe."

Weiss and his wife Roza have gathered around themselves a collection of weak-minded, delusional or willfully blind people who continue to insist the obvious isn't so. The latest outrage out of the Colonie Cult is Roza Weiss' pre-passover email to her followers in which she continues to insist her husband is innocent.  She even claims that despite rather clear (and written) disavowals of the local leadership that they are still part of the legitimate Jewish community. In an email to her followers dated 19 March 2010 (read the PDF), she claims "Perhaps most assuring and heartwarming, is the support and continued steadfast belief in my husband's integrity and innocence. Both publicly and privately, so many friends, community members, and community leaders have expressed their support for my husband and maintain their convictions of his innocence."

The truth is that outside of her little cult, no one in the Albany Orthodox Jewish community has been expressing support and certainly none of the leadership! Would Mrs. Weiss care to name some of these "supporters" among the community leadership so we can ask them why they would do such an inexcusable thing?

She says later in the email "And as I lay In bed the other night thinking of the events that transpired during the past weeks, my mind began to go crazy."  That would explain why an otherwise rational woman would continue to defend a low-life like Yaakov Weiss.

However, the most problematic part of her email is that she and her husband still claim to be Chabad of Colonie, despite the fact that they were tossed out of Chabad months ago! Even if we give her the benefit of the doubt, that she is blinded by love for her husband, surely she can read the written and public disavowal of Yaakov Weiss, Even a love-struck woman can grasp the fact that Chabad has, in writing and in no uncertain terms, stripped Yaakov Weiss of the right to represent Chabad in any capacity.

Why call Weiss' little group a cult? For starters, they are a violent and delusional bunch. Take a look at the NBC News report of Weiss' self-promotion rally in Latham (a suburb of Albany) the day after he confessed to the most degenerate acts against a child. Notice the violent behavior of his followers and the absolute refusal to deal with reality they exhibit. One woman, leaving the rally, claims he admitted nothing - even after being informed that he had indeed plead guilty just the day before, she insists he did nothing! Such groups are always dangerous and the Colonie Cult is no exception.

Another woman insists he is innocent - despite the fact he confessed! When asked why, she said, "we believe in him"

This statement is troubling - in legitimate religion one believes in G-d not in men. When we start to believe in a man, we leave religion and enter the realm of cults.

The torrent of abuse from Weiss' followers is increasingly directed against anyone who doesn't support their leader. These comments were gleaned from the WNYT viewer forum.

"What is more pathetic is the pitiful fools who came out to protest last night. They acted like they belonged on the Jerry Springer show or perhaps in the luny (sic) bin.

The only thing Rabbi Weiss is guilty of is being kind, generous, caring, intelligent and a truly honorable person. He is way above the low life scums who are making all these baseless accusations and made total fools of themselves last night."

Thanks for making us stronger!!!!"

When the poster is asked "Why did Weiss plead guilty?", he responded with:

"To get this ugly mess behind him. Have you not figured out that our justice system is not just."

This talking point goes right to Weiss' latest conspiracy theory - it is clear that his followers are all reading off the same script. They refuse to deal with reality and react violently to anyone who points out the obvious holes in their arguements and/or the danger their leader poses to decent society.

Of course, the Albany County Judicial System has a different take on it, however, because when Yaakov Weiss was sentenced on Monday, March 8, 2010 at 9:00AM the Hon. Stephen J. Herrick, said "you have utterly failed to accept responsibility for your actions,  you are not the victim here. The boys were the victims. ...Something happened in Albany in 2007 and 2008 regarding you and these two boys and it was not a good thing. You have not accepted that fact or the responsibility for it"

Judge Herrick sentenced Weiss to 60 days in jail, and to three years probation with sex offender restrictions attached, issued two orders of protection to keep him away from the two boys and ordered him to undergo sex offender counseling even though he is not classified as a sex offender.

Immediately after Judge Herrick sentenced Weiss, one of his cultists demonstrated an astounding ability to avoid dealing with reality. One Kathyrn Glasser, a member of Weiss' cult, said; "I know teenagers do not posses the maturity to know how to recant a lie and deal with the immediate consequences versus dealing with that for the rest of their lives,"

Bear in mind that she made this astounding statement immediately after Weiss confessed, after a court appointed psychologist found Weiss was a sexual predator and a danger to the community, and after he had been remanded to the custody of the Albany County Sheriff's department to begin his jail term!!

All of this begs the question, how much more evidence would a reasonable person need before concluding that Weiss is a dangerous predator? For a cultist no amount of evidence against their 'dear leader' will suffice - no matter what is proven, they will insist it is a conspiracy against their poor, persecuted cult and its leader.

A Cult is defined as:

A group that displays excessively zealous and unquestioning commitment to its leader and (whether he is alive or dead) regards his belief system, ideology, and practices as the Truth, as law and not open to question. - Apparently this is true of Weiss' followers.

Questioning, doubt, and dissent are discouraged or even punished. - It is worth noting that Weiss' followers began a campaign of lies and innuendo against those who came to protest his rally, even going so far as to launch a campaign (thank G-d unsuccessfully) to get those who protested Weiss' actions dismissed from their jobs.

The group has a polarized us-versus-them mentality, which may cause conflict with the wider society. - The Weiss group has set themselves against the entire Jewish community, the legal system and even the accepted standard of decency!

The leader is not accountable to any authorities (unlike, for example, teachers, military commanders or ministers, priests, monks, and rabbis of mainstream religious denominations). - This is definitely the situation with the Colonie group, Weiss is not a representative of Chabad or any other Jewish organization and he is accountable to no one and nothing!

In short, there can be no question, the group in Colonie following Weiss is a dangerous cult lead by a confessed criminal who is apparently incapable of remorse for his detestable actions
