Chabad Statement Regarding Yaakov Weiss

Chabad expels disgraced "rabbi"

Dear Friends,

This has been a most trying, disturbing, and painful time not only for those directly involved, but also for the greater community. Lest a silence of disgust and revulsion be misinterpreted, we feel it crucial to share with our school community the statement to the media below.

When allegations against Rabbi Yakov Weiss surfaced in June 2008, Chabad of the Capital Region, Albany, NY, in consultation with the national office and professional experts, immediately suspended him from his position as a Chabad representative. We thus strongly object to any and all media references, or personal insinuations, describing him as representing Chabad of Colonie. The recent court decision sadly confirms the unfortunate allegations and thus our decision to revoke his right and privilege to represent Chabad-Lubavitch in any capacity.

The administration and staff of the Maimonides School wish to assure all our families, friends and community that our school has a zero tolerance policy for abuse and pedophilia, and for any person or situation who puts children’s physical or emotional well-being at risk. Our faculty signed on to the “Aleinu” child-safety policies recommended by Torah Umesorah and other national educational organizations. If you wish to further discuss this issues, please feel free to call me at 423-4103.

May we grow forward, and do all in our ability to provide children a safe, healthy and positive environment with Torah values.

Rabbi Israel Rubin

Regional Chabad Director
